If you want the largest feature surface and don't mind your audio being processed on someone else's servers, Wispr Flow is a strong product. If you'd rather your voice never leave your machine - or you simply refuse to rent a utility - Bellow is built for you.

Where your voice actually goes

This is the difference that matters most, and it isn't a feature toggle - it's an architecture. Cloud dictation streams your audio to a server, transcribes it there, and sends text back. That's why it's fast on any laptop, and it's also why it stops working in airplane mode.

Bellow runs Whisper Large-v3 Turbo locally on Apple's Neural Engine. The model ships inside the app, so there's nothing to fetch and nothing to upload. Your audio and the resulting text never leave the machine.

Subscription versus buying it once

Cloud transcription costs the vendor money on every request, so a recurring fee is a reasonable way to fund it. Bellow has no such cost - the compute is your Mac's - so charging monthly would be renting you something that costs us nothing to run.

Where Wispr Flow is the better pick

We'd rather you buy the right tool than the wrong one:

• You're not on Apple Silicon. Bellow needs the Neural Engine - macOS 14+ on an M-series Mac. Cloud tools don't care what hardware you have.
• You want the widest feature set today. Bellow is a young, deliberately focused product.
• You need it on Windows. Bellow is Mac-only and there's no Windows version planned.

Where Bellow wins clearly

• Confidential work. Legal, medical, journalism, anything under NDA - "the audio never left the device" is a categorically stronger position than "the vendor says they delete it."
• Working offline. Planes, trains, dead hotel Wi-Fi, air-gapped machines.
• No subscription. One purchase, free updates, no seat to cancel.
• Verifiable privacy. Bellow reads its own code-signing entitlements at runtime and shows you that it has no network access. The OS resolves that from the signed binary, so we can't fake it without re-signing the app.
